Community Stories
“The most important asset of North Minneapolis is the spirit of the people.” – Bill English, community leader
“The assets in North Minneapolis are really its people, but the organizations or the tangible things around it are also assets, but only if they contribute to the personal lives of the people who live in North Minneapolis.” -Makeda Zulu-Gillespie, UROC
An asset based approach to community development places a heavy focus on individual assets. Individual capacities, skills, and relationships are central to an asset-based understanding of community (1). While these assets are very important, they are also very hard to measure. For this project, we conducted individual interviews with community members across North Minneapolis discussing their experiences living in the area and what they believe North's most important assets are. The experiences that residents have every day can tell us a lot about the neighborhood. By listening to their stories, we can get a little better idea about what it's like to live in this community.
